Optical Character Recognition, or OCR, is a technology that enables you to convert different types of documents, such as scanned paper documents, PDF files or images captured by a digital camera into editable and searchable data.

  • Does the quality of the original have a great impact on the recognition results?

Yes, it does. For instance, a poor fax copy, a low-contrast scan or a document image with a lot of speckles can cause recognition problems. Skewed scans and speckled images will make OCR service work harder and may increase a number of errors.

  • Can I edit a recognized text directly in ABBYY FineReader Online?

No, you cannot. To edit a recognized document, you should download it and then open in any suitable application for spell-checking and polishing. It is also possible to edit a recognized document directly in desktop versions of ABBYY FineReader.

  • Can I process a handwritten text?

The service is for printed texts only.

  • What format can I save the result to?

You can save your results in most commonly used formats, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, RTF, TXT, and searchable PDF or PDF/A.

  • How can I receive the results?

After the text is successfully recognized, you can download it from the “Profile” page. There you can see your tasks with one of the four statuses assigned:

    • Processing — please wait until the server recognizes your image…
    • Recognized — your document has been processed and you can download it now!
    • Recognition error – document hasn’t been recognized.
    • Low recognition quality. This task is free – there are too many errors in the recognized document.

There is another way to download the result: by clicking on the link sent to your e-mail box after every successful recognition. This download option becomes available upon selecting “I want to receive a link to the OCR result by e-mail” on the “FineReader Online” page.

The resulting document will be kept on the server for 72 hours.

  • I have not received a confirmation e-mail after the registration. What should I do?

    • Please check your spam filter.
    • Please check if you have typed your e-mail address correctly.
  • Can I recognize digital photos with ABBYY FineReader Online?

Yes. ABBYY FineReader Online recognizes digital photos as well as scanned documents. The service offers special image pre-processing features that help to eliminate speckles and skew on the original image. However, poor quality of digital images can cause recognition problems and errors.

For professional recognition of digital photos, take advantage of ABBYY FineReader Professional Edition, a desktop OCR solution which provides advanced automatic and manual image pre-processing features.

  • Сan I select recognition areas on a page?

In ABBYY FineReader Online, recognition areas are selected automatically.

  • I recognized text using you service, but there are too many errors in the recognized document.

If recognition results contain errors, try the following:

    1. Change scanning brightness:
      • If recognized letters are smudged, stuck together or dark, increase brightness (i.e. make the image lighter).
      • If recognized letters are torn or light and thin, decrease brightness (i.e. make the image darker).
    2. Set up scanning resolution:
      • Select 300 dpi for texts in 10 pt fonts or lager.
      • Select 400-600 dpi for texts in 9 pt fonts or smaller.
    3. Try a different scanning mode — Grayscale or Black & White.
    4. Make sure you have selected the right recognition language.
  • I don’t see the "Recognize" button. What should I do?

The version of the Flash Player installed on your computer may be incompatible with our image loader. Please update your version of the Flash Player or disable the Flash mode in the image loader. You can do this directly on the “Recognize” page.
